Columbia man sought in fatal shooting
A Cameron man has been identified as the victim in a Friday night shooting in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Richland County.
Darrick L. Darvy, 30, was shot multiple times and died of blood loss at the scene, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.
Sheriff's deputies were searching for Julius Marvin Jacobs of 229 Roosevelt Jacobs Road, Columbia, on charges of murder, said Sgt. Kim Myers with the Richland County Sheriff's Department.
A man was shot to death around 10 p.m. Friday night in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood, a Richland County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman said.
Sgt. Kim Myers said the man was shot multiple times in the 100 block of Roosevelt Jacobs Road, just off Fairfield Road in north-central Richland County.
The reason for the shooting, which Myers said resulted from some sort of disturbance, was not known late Friday night. No one else was injured, she said.
A man wanted in connection with a drive-by shooting Monday night in the Greenview community has been arrested.
Cordera Be'ne Hopkins, 19, is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and with discharging a firearm into a dwelling, said Columbia Police Capt. Carl E. Young.
Hopkins was arrested Wednesday and is at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
After two trips to the bank, where an 80-year-old woman had withdrawn about $8,000 she planned to send to a Jamaican scam artist to claim a prize, Mount Pleasant police stepped in and stopped the scam.
In the Midlands, a university retiree lost more than $80,000 to trickery, most of it involving overseas scam transactions for magazine subscriptions paid out through the year 2029.
"I was outraged to hear how persuasive these people can be when seeking to scam our seniors," said Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who Thursday announced formation of a statewide Task Force on Senior Fraud.
City of Charleston to buy site where 9 firefighters died
Charleston City Council has agreed to buy the site where nine firefighters died last year battling a blaze at a furniture store.
Council agreed Tuesday to borrow $1.875 million to buy the Sofa Super Store site where the firefighters were killed June 18, The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported.
A man was arrested Wednesday after police say he opened fire on his girlfriend at a Bluff Estates home.
Arthur Jones, 18, is charged with pointing and presenting a firearm and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, said Lt. Chris Cowan, Richland County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
A 20-year-old Gilbert man accused of taking dozens of computers from a high school was arrested Tuesday by Lexington County and Batesburg-Leesville authorities.
Jeremy Antwoin "Tookie" Williams was at the Lexington County jail Wednesday on $230,000 bail. He is charged with two counts of second-degree burglary, two counts of grand larceny and two counts of criminal conspiracy, the Sheriff's Department said. He is suspected of taking 51 computers valued at $75,238 from Batesburg-Leesville High School in February and April.
Police also are seeking a 16-year-old boy they say was an accomplice.
A West Columbia man accused of trying to steal a TV from Wal-Mart was arrested by West Columbia police.
George M. Murphy, 33, is charged with strong arm robbery, Police Chief Dennis K. Tyndall said. He is at the Lexington County Detention Center awaiting a bail hearing.
Tyndall said Murphy grabbed a 26-inch high-definition TV and ran out a fire door at the back of the store. He put the TV in his pickup parked outside but discovered he was blocked in by an employee operating a forklift, police say.
A 20-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy have been arrested by Richland County deputies in connection with a gang-related shooting in the Greenview community, authorities say.
Corey Anderson and the teen, who was not identified because of his age, were charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, Sheriff Leon Lott said.
Both were taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where they were awaiting charges from the city of Columbia, police say.
